In India,
the Society of Jesus had three workshops in Mangalore, Patna sad Madurai.
In Maharashtra, the Jesuits had no such institute. In the late forties,
Jesuit educators became aware that very few facilities existed for school
dropouts, who were ideal for the Technical field. In 1950, Fr. Pius Geisel,
SJ superior of the Poona Jesuits mooted the idea of a workshop-cum-training
Institute on the premises of St.Vincent’s High School. Fr. P. Haefeli
was instrumental in purchasing some old buses for use in St. Vincent’s.
He constructed a workshop for services and maintenance of these buses. Some
of the boys who had not shown particular aptitude for studies were taken
as apprentices in this workshop for non?formal training. The Goa Pune Province
then purchased a plot of land from the Pocha Gardens. Br. J. Pfiffner constructed
the workshops and classrooms with the assistance of Brs. Anton Herbert and
Otto Widmer. Initial help was provided by Swiss workers.

Fr. Charles D’Lima, who obtained generous assistance for expansion from the
people of the Federal Republic of Germany through MISEREOR (Catholic Bishops’
Conferenee), which assisted developing countries through projects and services
from volunteers in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Fr. J. B. Thiel was appointed
superintendent in 1966. He opted for I.T.I and St. Joseph’s was affiliated
to the National Council for Training in Vocational Trades. Foremen Courses
were begun is 1970 on the basis of the ‘Meister’ programme in Germany. Fr.
Hans staffner took over as Director in 1973, and Fr. Ivo Meyer in 1974 with
short-term and part-time training programmes

such as employment?oriented technical training for women and the physically
disabled.
